Wiel Arets from architect to designer Designs ILBAGNOALESSI Dot, irresistible temptation

Alessi presents its second ambitious bathroom project under licence: ILBAGNOALESSI Dot, designed by the Dutch designer Wiel Arets.
Wiel Arets is not only an architect with a distinctive style, but a free and independent thinker, and he has taken on the ILBAGNOALESSI Dot project with energy and enthusiasm.
ILBAGNOALESSI Dot is a excellent example of how much architecture can give to contemporary design, and how far the two disciplines can work together to create unique and extraordinary environments, with fresh enthusiasm, adopting a pure and uncontaminated approach.
The real strength of the Dutch architect, whose design work for Alessi started with his participation in the famous 2003 Tea & Coffee Towers metaproject, is his meticulous research and use of materials, which he treats as mouldable surfaces or living creatures, echoing and giving form to the surrounding elements. This is how we see them in the catalogue and in the book accompanying the project, “The Bathing Dutchman - a journey from Maastricht to Utrecht”, where the walls represent a black forest in which washbasins, baths and showers play a discreet role, but are nevertheless imposing with their clear-cut forms and colours.
The individual elements participate in a ritual of relaxation, rest and purification, and the style is formal and minimalist.
Water has no shape of its own, and for this reason is the mother of all shapes; here it seems to embody the concept around which the entire project revolves.
All the elements of the “Dot” bathroom possess an individual strength that is expressed as a sense of overall vitality where no single one dominates.
The attention to detail is careful and scrupulous, and we should note the narrow flat surface, a sort of lightweight space, which has consciously been placed around the upper section of the bath and washbasin. It acts as a shelf to provide simple access to everything you need to use when washing.
The choice of taps and fittings is interesting, with all the pieces the same size to avoid any sense of hierarchy.

ILBAGNOALESSI Dot by Wiel Arets is a new and complete scenario for the bathroom. Sanitary ware, bath tubs, shower cabin, furniture and accessories are produced and distributed by the Swiss company Laufen, while the faucets are produced and distributed by Oras from Finland.
