Massimiliano Fuksas at Cersaie for the first time

The guest of honour at the Conference “Bologna and Cersaie – Visions for a new architecture”, to be held on Thursday 28 September during the day devoted to this theme at the 24th Cersaie, is Massimiliano Fuksas, an eminent figure in the world of design who is particularly renowned for his artistic and pictorial freedom and his attention to urban issues in large metropolitan areas.

Born in Lithuania, Massimiliano Fuksas now lives and works in Rome (where he graduated in Architecture from the La Sapienza University) and in Paris. One of the most highly considered architects in Italy and abroad, he is best known in Italy for important works including the Ferrari Research Centre in Maranello and the famous sail in the new Milan exhibition centre.
Continuous experimentation on materials has always been one of Fuksas’ hallmarks and he has often used the products of the Italian tile industry in his works. By harmonising shapes, colours and materials, his research activities aim to create an architecture that promotes the well-being of the people who use it.

Massimiliano Fuksas’ career includes a wide range of achievements. In 1977 he set up his Rome studio, followed in 1989 and 1993 by those in Paris and Vienna. From 1994 to 1997 he was a member of the town-planning committees of Berlin and Salzburg. In 1998 he was awarded the career award “Vitruvio International a la Trayectoria” in Buenos Aires. From 1998 to 2000 he was director of the VII International Biennale of Architecture in Venice entitled "Less Aesthetics, More Ethics". In 2002 he was granted an Honorary Fellowship of the AIA (American Institute of Architects). He has received numerous awards and honours during his career, including the Grand Prix d’Architecture Française in 1999. The following year he was nominated Accademico Nazionale di San Luca and Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française. He also has an important media presence through an architecture column in the weekly magazine L’Espresso since January 2000.
He has enjoyed an outstanding academic career and has lectured at numerous universities including Staadtliche Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Stuttgart, the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Vienna, Columbia University in New York and the La Sapienza University in Rome.
