Competitiveness and knowledge as new growth factors
Italian industry is going through a difficult period due to competition from developing countries, high energy costs and excessive red tape. The Government’s top priority is to relaunch the country’s production system, a goal that it aims to achieve by increasing the competitiveness of various sectors so as to reduce the contribution that needs to be made by tax-payers to the various services and tariffs.
This challenge for the public and for businesses will be the theme of the inaugural conference of Cersaie 2006, to be held on Tuesday 26 September at 11.00 a.m. in the Europa Room in the Palazzo dei Congressi, Bologna, the title of which refers to both solutions and objectives: “Competitiveness and knowledge as new growth factors”.
Resuming growth is vital for the Italian economy, even if the tools for achieving it are not clearly defined or simple to implement. Given the complexity of the issue and at the same time the urgency of the challenge, the speakers at the event will include some of the key players in Italy’s future development. Confindustria Chairman Luca di Montezemolo, Minister for economic development Pierluigi Bersani and Assopiastrelle Chairman Alfonso Panzani, moderated by the director of Il Mulino Edmondo Berselli, will discuss the theme from their various perspectives.
There is no doubt that the economy is going through a difficult period. The corrective action introduced by the Financial Law will involve tough measures as part of the government’s frequently reiterated formula of sacrifice as an essential requirement for recovery. It is essential to review strategies for improving the competitiveness of Italian products in all world markets. The Italian ceramic tile industry is showing encouraging signs, including an increase in export turnover and volume in the first half of 2006 that reversed a medium-term trend. To improve competitiveness, it is necessary to review the economic system as a whole, which often has to deal with competitors with production costs, both direct (labour and machinery) and indirect (energy and infrastructures) that are lower than those of companies in our country.
The aim of the Cersaie 2006 inaugural conference is to prompt thought and discussion amongst the business people attending and the general public as to what Italian companies and the political world need to do to ensure that “Made in Italy” remains a byword for efficiency, creativity and total quality for many years to come.
